Cash, Cards, and Currency Exchange
The currency of Bahrain is the Bahraini Dinar (BHD). You can exchange local currency at airports, border banks, and hotels, but US dollars are widely accepted, so there is no need to prepare local currency specifically. Please prepare cash in US dollars.
Regarding credit cards, Visa and MasterCard can be used at large hotels and stores. Please note that JCB is not accepted in many places.
Tips
There is no tipping culture in Bahrain.
However, if you receive good service at a restaurant, it is advisable to give about 10% of the bill. For guides, around $20 per day is a good guideline.
Safety
Bahrain, like other GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, is relatively safe, and so far, no crimes targeting Japanese people have been reported.
However, crimes such as theft and assault do occur to some extent. Be cautious as there are also incidents of prostitution, illegal drug enforcement, and fraud.
Clothing
During the day, temperatures rise and it feels hot, so cotton summer clothing is recommended. Sun hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also essential for sun protection.
Although it is relatively tolerant among Islamic countries, avoid wearing short skirts or clothing that reveals body lines. When entering a mosque, women should wear modest clothing that covers up to the ankles. Men should wear long sleeves and long pants.
Things to Bring
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, travel insurance, sunburn and sun protection items
Visa Requirements and Arrangements
There are no visa waiver agreements between Japan and Bahrain, so a visa is required to enter Bahrain.
For obtaining a short-term stay visa for tourism or business, there are two methods: obtaining it upon arrival in Bahrain (on-arrival visa) or applying online in advance (generally takes 72 hours after application for issuance).
Please note that the Embassy of Bahrain in Japan does not issue visas.
Required Vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
However, travelers from countries with a risk of yellow fever and those who have transited for more than 12 hours in such countries, who are over 9 months old, are required to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate (Yellow Card).
Things to note during your stay
Photography of government buildings, military facilities, ports, and airports is prohibited.
Additionally, women, in particular, do not like to be photographed. If you wish to take photos, be sure to obtain permission beforehand.
