What kind of country is Turkmenistan?

Turkmenistan is located east of the Caspian Sea in Central Asia, and although its land area is 1.3 times that of Japan, 85% of it is occupied by the Karakum Desert.
Turkmenistan has three World Heritage Sites, but recently, the 'Door to Hell,' where gas has been burning for over 40 years, has gained attention as a spectacular sight.
It may not be a familiar country, but Turkmenistan, rich in Silk Road history, will surely capture your travel spirit.

Various things to consider when traveling to Turkmenistan.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
・When exchanging money, it is advisable to first exchange Japanese yen to US dollars or euros before converting to manat. There are many places where you can exchange US dollars or euros, and the rates are favorable.
・Apart from hotels and upscale restaurants, there are still many places where credit cards are not accepted. Therefore, it is essential to carry cash.
Tips
・Tipping is not very customary in Turkmenistan.
・In hotels used by tourists, it is a good idea to leave a small tip of about 0.5 to 1 US dollar.
Public Safety
・Turkmenistan borders countries with unstable security, so depending on the political situation in neighboring countries and the movements of extremist groups, the domestic situation may become unstable. It is especially advisable to avoid areas near the border with Afghanistan.
・To avoid becoming a victim of crime, be mindful to avoid actions that make you susceptible to crime, such as walking alone at night, forgetting to zip your bag, or carrying large amounts of cash.
Clothing
・For clothing, it is advisable to dress in layers to accommodate temperature differences.
・From spring to autumn: In addition to summer clothes, it is good to have long-sleeved shirts or cardigans. Also, in summer, the sun is relentless, and there is little shade at tourist sites like ruins, so hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential items.
・Winter: It is dry, so hand cream, masks, and adequate warm clothing are necessary.
Things you should bring with you
・Stomach medicine, cold medicine, mobile battery, tissues, wet tissues, insect repellent items, sun protection items, etc.
Visa availability and arrangements
・A visa is required.
・At the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Japan, only those who have an invitation letter from the Turkmenistan Immigration Bureau can apply for a visa.
・Excluding holidays and public holidays, if you stay for more than three days, you need to register your stay. The registration is done by the inviting party, such as a travel company, business, or relevant government agency, so be sure to confirm immediately upon entry.
Required vaccinations
・There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
・However, vaccinations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tetanus, and rabies are recommended.
・For children, in addition to regular vaccinations in Japan, vaccinations for mumps, chickenpox, shingles, and rotavirus are recommended.
