Things to Know About Traveling to Belgium.

Cash, Cards, and Currency Exchange

The currency in Belgium is the Euro.
Belgium is largely cashless, and most places accept credit cards like Visa and MasterCard, as well as Apple Pay. There are increasing numbers of places where cash is not accepted, so you don't need to carry much cash.
However, if you plan to visit flea markets, you will need some small cash. Currency exchange is available in Japan, at local airports, or banks, but considering fees, it’s better to exchange a small amount of cash in Japan beforehand.

Tips

Belgium does not have a tipping culture.
In table-service restaurants, it is common to leave the small change as a tip.
Additionally, when using porter services or taxis, it is customary to give a tip of a few euros.
If you are satisfied with a guide's service, a tip of a few euros is sufficient.

Safety

Crimes such as pickpocketing and theft targeting tourists are on the rise, with reports of robbery as well. These incidents are concentrated in tourist areas and terminal stations, but crimes like robbery and snatching can occur anywhere and at any time, often exploiting a moment of distraction. Always stay vigilant when out and about.

Clothing

Belgium is slightly cooler than Japan, so it’s recommended to bring a jacket.
There can be temperature drops in the mornings and evenings, as well as fluctuations due to the weather, so wearing layers for easy adjustment is advisable.
Since cobblestone streets are common, wearing shoes with good cushioning is recommended.

For evening dinners, having a jacket and a dress will allow you to adapt to any occasion.

Visa Requirements and Arrangements

A visa waiver agreement exists between Japan and Belgium, so visas are not required for stays of up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism or visiting acquaintances.
Belgium is a member of the Schengen Agreement. Therefore, the total stay within Schengen countries is limited to "a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period." Additionally, you must have a travel document (passport) issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area.
