What kind of country is Botswana?

In Botswana, 17% of the land is designated as national parks and wildlife reserves, and 20% is designated as wildlife management areas, making it a country rich in nature and wildlife. The natural landscape varies greatly, including deserts, deltas, and salt lakes. In Botswana, while the southwest is covered by the Kalahari Desert, the north is lush with jungles, and a vast area of about 11 square meters from the Chobe River to the Okavango Wetlands is designated as Chobe National Park. On safaris by car and boat, you can encounter numerous wild animals such as elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and crocodiles. The many precious encounters that cannot be experienced in Japan will be lifelong treasures.

Things to consider when traveling to Botswana.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
・For currency exchange, obtain US dollars or euros in Japan and exchange them for pula at local airports, shopping malls, or hotels. Japanese yen is not usually accepted for exchange to pula, so be sure to obtain the aforementioned foreign currencies in advance.
・Credit cards are somewhat widespread in Botswana and can be used at hotels, restaurants, and large supermarkets. However, the types of cards accepted are limited, with VISA and MasterCard being mostly usable.
・In small individual shops or taxis, only cash may be accepted, so please exchange some money for pula, even if it's a small amount.
Tips
・There is a custom of giving tips.
・Airport or hotel porters: About 5 pula per piece of luggage
・Restaurants: If the service charge is not included in the bill, a tip of about 10% of the bill amount is standard.
Public Safety
Compared to neighboring countries, it is said that the politics and economy are stable, and the public safety is good.
It is not that no crime occurs at all. There are cases of robbery, pickpocketing, assault, and credit card skimming. To avoid becoming a victim of crime, exercise utmost caution by not walking alone at night, following strangers, or taking your eyes off your belongings.
Clothing
During the day, it is convenient to have a long-sleeved light shirt to avoid strong sunlight and something like a sweater or thick jacket to wear in the morning and evening chill. Especially in winter, a thick outerwear is essential.
Things you should bring with you
Stomach medicine, cold medicine, mobile battery, insect repellent items, sun protection items, etc.
Visa availability and arrangements
Japanese nationals are allowed to enter without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism or business. For stays longer than 90 days, it is necessary to obtain a residence permit after entering the country, so please apply to the immigration office.
Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel. However, vaccinations for rabies, tuberculosis, and HIV are recommended.
Since it is a country where medical care is not very advanced, it is recommended to get vaccinated in Japan before traveling.
