After spending eight years at a travel agency specializing in Japan’s hidden gems—where I honed my skills in planning, sales, and tour guiding—I became captivated by Guatemala after joining a tour for just one day, which prompted me to travel there on my own. I subsequently worked for ten years as a cultural and public relations officer at the Japanese Embassy in Guatemala. Having established a solid network in Guatemala and determined to share its allure with more people in Japan, I co-founded, in January 2004 with my husband Shingo Matsumoto, a travel agency approved by the government tourism bureau. With qualifications as a travel operations manager and as a guide certified by the Guatemalan Tourism Authority, I have been involved in the travel industry for over 30 years. I am thrilled to deliver the full splendor of Guatemala and Central America to you!

What kind of country is Nicaragua?

Nicaragua is a Latin American country located in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest.

The ruins of León Viejo, said to be the oldest city from the Spanish colonial era and a World Heritage site. Managua, the capital, is filled with attractions such as the Rubén Darío Theater, the Cultural Palace, and the black statue made of tin of Sandino. The León Cathedral, a World Heritage site known for its Antigua Guatemala Baroque architecture, was built over many years starting in 1747. The Caribbean coast offers spots for surfing and diving, as well as the Corn Islands. Ometepe Island offers volcanic trekking.

In recent years, Nicaragua has rapidly developed as a tourist destination, offering various ways to enjoy it, from cultural spots where you can glimpse Latin American history from the European colonial era to ecotourism spots that make use of its rich nature.

What to see in Nicaragua.

  • Leon

    Classic

    Area

The official name, Santiago de los Caballeros de León, is rarely used. Since the establishment of a university in 1813, the city has flourished as an academic hub. The León Cathedral and the old town preserve Spanish colonial-style architecture, showcasing a harmonious blend of Spanish design and Latin American regional characteristics. The colorful streets, characteristic of Latin culture, are also delightful spots to explore.

  • Semana Santa

    Classic

    event

The largest Catholic religious event, the Easter festival, is known as Easter in the United States. Held annually sometime between March and April, participants dress in costumes and celebrate with carnival festivities. This festival offers a unique experience distinct from Japanese festivals. Since traditions vary by town, be sure to consult a local coordinator for recommendations.

    Hidden Gem

    spot

An island in Nicaragua's Lake Nicaragua, formed by two volcanoes. The island features wetlands, cloud forests, and tropical rainforests, offering a chance to see diverse flora and fauna not found in Japan. It is also a treasure trove of pre-Columbian petroglyphs (carvings on rocks and caves). Numerous activities, such as volcano trekking, are well-organized. All environmental conservation efforts and tour services are managed by local residents, making it a renowned destination for eco-tourism.

Various concerns about traveling to Nicaragua.

Cash, Cards, and Currency Exchange
The currency of Nicaragua is the Nicaraguan Córdoba.
In urban areas, Visa and MasterCard credit cards can be used. However, in some rural areas or markets, having cash is more reassuring. Since exchanging currency within Japan or from Japanese yen is difficult, it is recommended to bring US dollars from Japan and exchange them for local currency at the local airport or exchange offices.
Tips
As in Europe and America, about 10% is customary in restaurants where service charges are not included.
For porters and room service at hotels, about 1 US dollar is the standard.
Safety
Robbery incidents are frequent in Nicaragua, especially street robberies by two people on a motorcycle in urban areas, occurring both day and night. Many cases of pickpocketing on public transportation have also been reported.
Resisting can sometimes escalate the damage, so be sure to pay attention and avoid areas you shouldn't go to.
Clothing
The climate varies slightly depending on the area you visit, but it is generally hot, humid, and warm.
Simple summer clothing is recommended, but having a jacket to put on for air conditioning is reassuring. Sun protection and measures against sunburn are also advisable due to the harsh sunlight.
Things to Bring
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, overseas travel insurance, sun protection items, insect repellent
Visa Requirements and Arrangements
Japanese nationals do not need to obtain a visa in advance if their stay in the four Central American countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua) is within a total of 90 days. They can stay in Nicaragua by purchasing a tourist card (10 USD) at the time of immigration inspection.
If you plan to stay for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for an extension of stay at the immigration office.
Additionally, if you leave Nicaragua and re-enter without extending your stay within the country, you must exit to a country other than the aforementioned three Central American countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras) to be granted a new stay period upon re-entry. Please be cautious.
Required Vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.

However, travelers over the age of one from countries with a risk of yellow fever infection are required to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate (Yellow Card).
It is also recommended to get vaccinated against malaria before traveling.

Areas of interest other than El Salvador.
