What kind of country is Eswatini?

Eswatini, known as "Swaziland" until April 19, 2018, is a small country located in the southern part of the African continent. It is a monarchy, often referred to as Africa's last ancient kingdom.

In addition to spots like the Mkhaya Game Reserve, famous for rhino sightings, and the scenic Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary where you can enjoy wildlife and majestic nature, there are places like the Mantenga Nature Reserve and Cultural Village where you can experience Eswatini's traditional dances and culture.

In Africa, Eswatini is a country where time flows naturally and leisurely, with still few tourists visiting. It's not a typical "resort," so if you want to experience authentic African nature, culture, and people, this is the place for you!

Consult with a coordinator about anything you're curious about or want to try, and enjoy a special tailor-made journey just for you.

Things to know about traveling in Eswatini.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
The currency of Eswatini is the Lilangeni (plural: Emalangeni), but within the country, especially in places frequented by tourists, South African currency (Rand) can be used as is.
It's recommended to convert to Euros or US Dollars from Japan, as it makes exchanging currency at local airports, banks, or hotels easier. For a stay of a few days, having South African Rand might suffice.
In urban areas, you can use cards, but having a small amount of cash is reassuring.
Tips
There is a tipping custom. In restaurants without a service charge, about 10% is customary. Additionally, it's good to give your guide around 15 to 20 US dollars per day, all at once on the final day.
Public Safety
The crime rate in Eswatini is not high compared to neighboring countries.
However, since it borders South Africa and Mozambique, it is said to be a transit point for drug trafficking between the two countries, so caution is needed near the borders as there are dangerous areas.

Also, be cautious of pickpocketing and theft in tourist areas.
Clothing
Throughout the year, clothing such as short sleeves and lightweight shirts for sun protection are suitable.
Due to the chill in the mornings and evenings, it's reassuring to have an extra layer. Additionally, women need to wear skirts as formal attire when visiting places like the royal palace.
Things you should bring with you
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, travel insurance, sunburn and sun protection items
Visa availability and arrangements
For short stays of up to 30 days, a visa is not required.
Since there is no Eswatini embassy in Japan, please check with the Eswatini embassy in Malaysia (Phone: +60-3-2163-2511, https://www.swazilandkualalumpur.org/consular_services/visa.php) or the Eswatini authorities (https://www.gov.sz/index.php/services-sp-22242747/visa) for the latest information on procedures and regulations.
Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
However, travelers from countries with a risk of yellow fever and those who have transited for more than 12 hours in such countries, who are over 9 months old, are required to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate (Yellow Card).
It is recommended to get vaccinated against malaria before going.
