What kind of country is Rwanda?

Rwanda, known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," is a mountainous country where most of the land is occupied by hills.
Among several national parks, Volcan National Park is famous for being home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. There are also tours that travelers can join, so you can meet wild gorillas here.
Rwanda is a treasure trove of abundant nature and wildlife, and various animals live in other national parks, so you can experience something extraordinary that you cannot experience in Japan.

Rwanda attractions.

  • Volcanoes National Park

    Classic

    Experience

A sanctuary for mountain gorilla trekking. Volkan National Park, which consists of five inactive volcanoes, is said to be home to about 650 mountain gorillas. The guides in the national park check the location of the herd every day, so the encounter rate is very high, attracting tourists from all over the world. The excitement of encountering a gorilla in the jungle is an experience that cannot be expressed in words.

  • Kigali

    Classic

    area

The capital of Rwanda has grown so much that it has been called the "Miracle of Africa". Since the tragedy of 1994, it has developed rapidly and has become known as one of the cleanest and safest cities in Africa. You can enjoy the lively city life in the cityscape surrounded by beautiful hills, cafes, art galleries and markets. As a visitor to the country, such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Hotel Milcollins, it's important to keep an eye on its dark history.

  • Lake Kivu

    A hidden gem

    spot

A resort area where the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo passes through the lake. The poetic beauty of the archipelago is woven together, and you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a quiet time in the great outdoors. Relaxing in one of the surrounding cottages, exploring the lake on a boat while feeling the breeze blowing on the lake's surface, or enjoying a stroll along the shore will refresh your body and mind.

This is what I am worried about when traveling to Rwanda.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
・When exchanging money, obtain US dollars and euros in advance in Japan and exchange them for Rwandan francs at local airports, hotels, and currency exchange offices in the city. There are almost no exchange offices in Japan that handle Rwandan francs.
・In addition, payment in Rwanda is basically cash. However, the number of stores that accept credit cards is increasing considerably, and international brand cards are also accepted at high-end supermarkets and restaurants of intermediate class or higher used by tourists. Therefore, we recommend using a combination of cash and cards.
Tips
・ Basically, tipping is not customary, but it is smarter to give even a small amount in tourist spots and urban areas where there are many tourists from Europe and the United States.
・ When you receive room service, luggage transportation, or special services at a restaurant in a medium~high-end hotel, it is common to give about 500 RF or 1 dollar.
Public Safety
・The security situation in Rwanda is relatively good.
・The danger level of Rwanda announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is level 1 for the whole country, and there is no particularly dangerous area. However, it cannot be ruled out that the security situation near the border with neighboring Brazil and the Republic of the Congo may change suddenly, so it is necessary to be careful.
However, it does not mean that crimes do not occur at all, and petty crimes such as pickpocketing and snatching have occurred, so do not let your guard down.
Clothing
・ Dry season: Japan summer clothes such as short sleeves are recommended during the day. However, it gets quite cold in the mornings and evenings, so it is useful to have something to wear on top of it.
・Rainy season: Basically, you can stay comfortable in the same clothes as in the dry season, but be sure to bring rain gear such as a windbreaker or folding umbrella in case of a sudden squall.
Things you should bring with you
Stomach medicine, cold medicine, mobile battery, insect repellent items, sun protection items, etc.
Visa availability and arrangements
・ It is necessary to obtain a visa according to the purpose of travel. At that time, please be sure to check the number of days remaining in your passport and whether there is enough space for unused visas.
Required vaccinations
There is no mandatory travel. However, the following vaccinations are recommended.
Adults: Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, (typhoid, rabies, tetanus, depending on living conditions), yellow fever
・Children: Vaccines recommended in Japan include chickenpox, mumps, Japan encephalitis, hepatitis A, meningococcal bacteria

Additionally, travelers over the age of one coming from countries at risk of yellow fever infection are required to have a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
