What kind of country is Norway?

Norway, a Nordic country with a land size almost the same as Japan, is long and narrow from north to south, with half of its territory located in the Arctic Circle, known as 'Lapland.'

The charm of Norway lies in its breathtaking nature. With a climate completely different from Japan, there are complex geographical formations like fjords and the Jostedalsbreen glacier, formed over an unimaginable span of time through glacial erosion. Additionally, there are various world heritage sites that convey human culture and history to the present, such as the colorful wooden warehouses of Bryggen, the industrial heritage of Rjukan and Notodden that developed as a new global industry in the early 20th century, the rock carvings of Alta believed to have been created between 4200 BC and 500 BC, and the wooden church of Urnes, which features an architectural style that blends Viking and Christian cultures that later spread to Norway.

Of course, there are also many spots where you can view the aurora during winter.

If you tell the local coordinator of Oooh the spots you want to visit or the scenery you want to see, you can create a special tailor-made trip just for you that is not included in any package!

The word 'fjord' originates from the Norwegian language. It refers to complex geographical formations of bays and inlets created by glacial erosion, resulting in beautiful, art-like landscapes formed over many years by nature. Norway has numerous fjords, but the West Norwegian Fjords—Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord—are registered as World Natural Heritage sites and are also popular vacation spots for Norwegians.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
・The currency unit of Norway is the 'krone' (denoted as 'kr' or 'NOK'). The subunit is the 'øre', with 100 øre equaling 1 krone. Currency exchange is possible at local airports, but since credit cards are accepted in most places, cash is not often necessary.
・VISA and Mastercard can be used almost everywhere. However, American Express and JTB may not be accepted in some cases.
Tips
・Service charges are included in hotel and restaurant bills, so tipping is generally not necessary.
・For room service, leaving a tip of about 10 kroner is appreciated, and if the service was excellent, a tip of around 10% is welcomed.
Public Safety
Norway is often considered a relatively safe country, but compared to Japan, there is a higher occurrence of common crimes, with pickpocketing and theft being frequent. In crowded places like stations and tourist spots, it is necessary to be cautious against pickpocketing and theft by keeping valuables like bags securely on you.
Additionally, the area around Oslo Central Station is not considered safe, especially at night, so please avoid walking alone.
Clothing
Due to the country's north-south expanse, the arrival of the four seasons varies by area. Compared to Japan, it is indeed colder, so it is necessary to check the weather forecast of the area you are visiting and choose appropriate clothing. The humidity is low throughout the year, and there is no rainy season. Except for the Arctic Circle, thanks to the Gulf Stream flowing along the coast, it is warm for its latitude. It is recommended to dress in layers for easy adjustment.
Things you should bring with you
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, travel insurance, warm clothing
Visa availability and arrangements
For Japanese nationals traveling for purposes such as tourism or business trips without income, a visa is not required for stays of up to 90 days.
However, in accordance with the provisions of the Schengen Agreement, which Norway is a part of, when traveling to Norway for a short stay, you must possess a passport that is valid for more than three months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen area and was issued within the last ten years.
Required vaccinations
・There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
