What kind of country is Poland?

Known as the Heart of Europe, Poland is also famous as the birthplace of Chopin and Copernicus, and is located in central Europe.

Not only cultural highlights, but also natural attractions such as the Białowieża Forest, known as 'Europe's last primeval forest,' the beautiful northern Baltic Sea coast, and the lake district formed during the Ice Age.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
- For currency exchange, obtain US dollars or euros in Japan beforehand and exchange them for local currency on-site. Locally, you can exchange money at banks, airports, hotels, and privately-run exchange offices called Kantor in various cities.
- Credit cards are widely used in Poland, and most stores accept them as a payment method. It is recommended to limit cash exchanges to small amounts and use a combination of cards and cash.
Tips
・There is a custom of giving tips.
- Taxis: Round up the change.
- Fine dining restaurants: About 10% of the bill if satisfied with the service.
- Hotels: About 3 zl per piece of luggage for porters, and 3-4 zl for tipping.
Public Safety
- Compared to other countries, Poland is said to be a safe country. However, compared to Japan, the crime rate is higher, so caution is necessary. Pay particular attention to crimes aimed at valuables, such as theft, burglary, and robbery.
- Dangerous areas include major cities such as Warsaw, Krakow, and Gdansk, where crime rates are higher, so be careful. Tourists are targeted, so ensure you take proper security measures to avoid being targeted.
Clothing
- Appropriate clothing varies by season.
- Summer: Short sleeves are suitable during the day, but temperatures drop in the morning and evening, so having something light like a cardigan is convenient. Sudden weather changes can occur even in summer, so it's reassuring to have cold weather measures in place.
- Winter: While not extremely cold, proper cold weather protection is necessary. Temperatures can rise even in winter, so in addition to cold weather measures, prepare clothing that allows for easy layering and temperature regulation.
Things you should bring with you
Stomach medicine, cold medicine, mobile battery, insect repellent items, sun protection items, etc.
Visa availability and arrangements
For Japanese nationals traveling for purposes such as tourism or business trips without income, a visa is not required for stays of up to 90 days.
However, in accordance with the regulations of the Schengen Agreement, to travel to Poland for a short stay, you must possess a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area and was issued within the last ten years.
Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel. However, vaccinations for hepatitis B and tetanus are recommended.
