What kind of country is Serbia?

Serbia is located inland in the central-western part of the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe.

It is known that people have lived in Serbia since the Paleolithic era, and in the capital Belgrade, located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, there are spots like the Belgrade Fortress, which many countries competed to acquire, and nearby parks, as well as Knez Mihailova Street, where beautiful European charm and Oriental atmosphere blend harmoniously over a long history. There are also many attractive spots away from the capital. Near Kraljevo in central Serbia is the Studenica Monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and near Zaječar is Gamzigrad, dating back to the 3rd century Roman era, the birthplace and burial site of the ancient Roman Emperor Galerius, with the ruins of the fortress Romuliana (Felix Romuliana), and world heritage sites like the lost kingdom's capitals Stari Ras and Sopoćani, where you can see European historical sites from Japan's Heian and Kamakura periods.

Southeast European countries, which are not very familiar to Japan, are areas that can be compactly toured.

There are also historical spots like buildings with remnants of the socialist era and traces of air raids. With attractions compactly gathered, it's a city you should definitely visit in Serbia if you want to see various sights.

Saint Sava Cathedral

One of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world, offering a panoramic view of Belgrade. The plan was conceived in the 1900s, but construction was halted due to World War I and II. During the socialist regime, religious practices were banned by national policy, and construction progress was slow. However, construction resumed in 1985, and the building was finally completed in October 2020. In front of the cathedral stands a statue of Saint Sava. Inside, the cathedral boasts a magnificent mosaic covering 12,000 square meters and tiles covering 19,000 square meters, making it truly impressive.

Belgrade Fortress

A fortress built in the 4th century BC, located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is surrounded by a park and serves as a spot where you can see ruins and historical and cultural buildings. Due to its location, it has traces of plunder and rule by various countries, including the ancient Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Ottoman Empire, and Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is also a place of relaxation for the people living in Belgrade, so be sure to visit.

Cash, cards and currency exchange: The dinar is used in Serbia.
Since exchanging currency in Japan is difficult, it is recommended to exchange yen for euros or dollars in Japan and then exchange them for local currency, including small bills and coins, upon arrival.
In urban areas, international credit cards like Visa and MasterCard are usable. Be aware that entering a PIN may be required in some cases.

Tips: Tipping is not a basic custom, but it is good to give a small tip for good service.
Additionally, using a toilet costs about 30 dinars, and hotel cleaning costs around 80 dinars.

Public Safety: Crimes such as theft (pickpocketing and bag snatching) occur, especially around the capital Belgrade. There have been reports of Japanese people falling victim to crimes. Be particularly cautious on public transportation like trains and buses, and in tourist areas (such as Knez Mihailova Street and Kalemegdan Park), restaurants, and large shopping malls, where incidents are frequently observed.

Clothing: In Serbia, wearing clothing similar to that in Japan is acceptable, but since there are many high-altitude areas, it gets chilly in the mornings and evenings, so having one jacket is just right.
Depending on the area you are visiting, it might be better to check the temperature properly before going.

For walking around the city, comfortable shoes are recommended.

Visa availability and arrangements: For Japanese nationals, a visa is waived for short stays of up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism, provided no employment is undertaken. However, it is important to note that the period of stay without a visa is limited to a total of 90 days within 180 days from the first day of entry.
Please note that for short-term studies such as short-term study abroad, it does not qualify as a short stay, and obtaining a student visa is necessary.

Required vaccinations: There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
