What kind of country is Croatia?

Croatia is a country on the Balkan Peninsula facing the Adriatic Sea.

Croatian buildings are often made of stone with red roofs, and the scenery of the beautiful World Heritage city of Dubrovnik, with its blue sea and red roofs, is said to be a model for a Studio Ghibli film.
At the World Heritage sites scattered throughout Croatia, you can experience the history of various civilizations that have declined, such as Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, the Ottoman Empire, and the Venetian Republic.

Additionally, along the Adriatic Sea, there are over 1,200 islands with many marine resorts boasting a long history, allowing you to experience a European vacation.
Known as a production area for wine, olive oil, and truffles, enjoy gourmet delights while creating your own special tailor-made journey.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
The currency has been the Euro since 2023. You can exchange for Euros locally, but considering the rates, it is recommended to exchange some in Japan beforehand.
In large cities and shopping areas, cards can be used, but many markets, cafes, and bakeries require cash payments. Additionally, some buses only accept cash at ticket counters, so it might be wise to have a certain amount of cash ready.
Tips
In Croatia, it is common to leave a tip when receiving services at luxury hotels or restaurants. For regular hotels, restaurants, and taxis, it is typical to leave a tip by rounding up the amount or leaving a tip when you receive good service.
Public Safety
Croatia's security situation is considered relatively safe among Central and Eastern European countries. However, during the tourist season, especially in summer, pickpocketing incidents involving tourists increase, so caution is advised. There are reports of pickpocketing during photo-taking, so always remain vigilant.
Clothing
During Croatia's peak tourist season in summer, it is recommended to wear sunglasses and a hat for sun protection, along with layered clothing with a light jacket.
In the leisurely spring, the temperature difference between morning and evening can be significant, so bring a jacket. It also rains frequently, so a waterproof jacket might be useful.
In Croatia's autumn, due to temperature differences compared to Tokyo, it's reassuring to have a warm jacket or a sturdy sweater. A scarf can also be convenient.
Winter is colder than in Japan, so bring solid winter clothing. Items like pocket warmers are not available locally, so bring them if needed.
Comfortable shoes are recommended, but in winter, it's reassuring to have warm footwear that prevents cold feet and is non-slip on icy surfaces.
Things you should bring with you
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, overseas travel insurance, cold weather gear (hand warmers), rain gear
Visa availability and arrangements
Croatia has been a member of the Schengen Agreement since January 1, 2023. Japanese nationals are exempt from obtaining a visa for short stays of up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism or visiting acquaintances. From 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be introduced. From 2025, Japanese travelers to ETIAS participating countries will need to possess an approved ETIAS upon arrival. Within the territory of the agreement, short stays without a visa are only permitted within the limit of "not exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period." As a result, the maximum period one can stay without a visa in the Schengen area, including Croatia, is "90 days," and all days spent in the Schengen area within the past 180 days are counted as part of the short stay period. Additionally, those exempt from short-stay visa requirements must have a passport with a remaining validity of more than three months from the planned departure date from the Schengen member country.
Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
