What kind of country is the Czech Republic?

Located in Central Europe, the Czech Republic is a rich land centered around the fertile Bohemian Plateau, with mountain ranges and forests.

The capital, Prague, is a rare city where the entire area is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is lined with buildings from various eras, showcasing architectural styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. It is also known as a 'museum of buildings.' Prague alone offers plenty to enjoy, making it a recommended destination even for short trips to Europe.

Additionally, you can enjoy historical castles of various architectural styles, such as the Renaissance-style Telč Castle and Litomyšl Castle, and the Baroque-style Mikulov Castle, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Since the country is not very large, you can explore it in many ways depending on your itinerary.

If you want a classic yet unique and special trip, consult with a local coordinator to create a tailor-made journey just for you.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
The currency of Czechia is the Czech koruna (Kc).
It is possible to exchange money at local airports or banks and hotels in urban areas, but generally, you can use cards almost everywhere. Additionally, you can withdraw cash from ATMs using a credit card.
If you are traveling to cities other than Prague or using certain trams, where only cash is accepted, it is recommended to carry a certain amount of cash.
Tips
Tipping is not very common, but in table-service restaurants, unless the service was particularly poor, it is considered polite to round up the bill and leave around 10% as a tip.

Tipping for taxis, bars, or hotel cleaning services is not very common.
Public Safety
Czech society and public safety are generally stable. However, the crime rate is three times higher than in Japan, so caution is necessary.
Japanese people are often targeted for pickpocketing and theft, so it is important to appear vigilant and avoid showing any signs of carelessness.
Clothing
Like Japan, Czechia has four distinct seasons, and since the country has little variation in elevation, there is not much difference in climate between cities.
In spring, it is recommended to wear layers to adjust to temperature changes. In summer, a hat and sunglasses for sun protection make it more comfortable, and a light jacket is useful for cooler mornings and evenings. Autumn is pleasant, but having a scarf or similar item is handy for colder days. In winter, it is advisable to prepare warm clothing such as hats, scarves, and down jackets to stay protected from the cold.
Things you should bring with you
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, travel insurance, warm clothing
Visa availability and arrangements
There is a mutual visa waiver agreement between Japan and Czechia, and visas are not required for short stays of up to three months for purposes such as tourism, business negotiations, or attending conferences.
Czechia is a member of the Schengen Agreement. Starting in 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be introduced. From 2025 onward, Japanese travelers to ETIAS-participating countries will need to possess an approved ETIAS upon arrival. Under the agreement, visa-free short stays are permitted only within the limit of 'a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period.' As a result, the maximum visa-free stay within the Schengen area, including Czechia, is 90 days, and all days spent in the Schengen area within the past 180 days are counted toward this limit.
Additionally, those eligible for the short-stay visa waiver must have a passport with a validity period of more than three months beyond the planned departure date from a Schengen Agreement member country.
Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
