Latvia, the central country of the three Baltic States, located on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.
It gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1990 and became the country it is today.
It borders Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, and Belarus to the southeast. In addition to Latvian as the primary language, many people are multilingual, speaking Russian, English, and German.
The capital, Riga, has long flourished as a port city and remains the largest city in the Baltic States, offering many attractions. The Old Town of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is said to be more German than Germany itself, with medieval German-style architecture still standing. In 2023, the Old Town of Kuldīga was newly designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This town, which was part of German territory in the 13th century, prospered as a trade hub thanks to the Venta Waterfall, the widest in Europe, located on the eastern side of the town. The traditional townscape has been preserved to this day.
Despite being influenced by neighboring countries over the long course of history, the Baltic States have woven a history filled with beautiful nature and mutual respect among their people, creating stories that resonate deeply.
