What kind of country is Lithuania?

Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic States located on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, and the only one with a capital situated inland.

Lithuania, inhabited since ancient times before the Common Era, offers numerous spots where you can glimpse its rich nature and the culture of people who have endured various hardships.
In the capital Vilnius, you'll find one of Europe's largest Old Towns, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with many Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque-style medieval buildings. Kernavė, the medieval capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, preserves archaeological sites from the Middle Ages and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Curonian Spit, which stretches along the Baltic Sea and into Russia, is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This beautiful landscape was saved from becoming sand dunes in the 16th century through human reforestation efforts.

In 2023, Kaunas, located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, was newly recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site under the title "Modernist Architecture City of Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism 1919–1939." Its cultural value was acknowledged due to its unique development as a temporary capital between World War I and World War II.

The Baltic States, far from Japan, share some common history while also having distinct histories, offering a place where you can experience cultures that are similar yet subtly different.
It may be an unfamiliar concept in Japan, but it is sure to be an extraordinary journey where you can experience diverse histories and cultures.
In Lithuania, where beautiful nature and culture await, consult with local coordinators to create a tailor-made, unforgettable journey based on what you want to do.

Lithuania attractions.

  • Vilnius

    Classic

    area

The capital of Lithuania. The only capital among the Baltic states that does not face the sea. Its Old Town, one of the largest in Europe, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features numerous buildings showcasing medieval architectural styles such as Baroque and Gothic. The various church architectures, in particular, are truly remarkable. The Old Town has no clear boundaries, allowing visitors to seamlessly enjoy the transition from medieval streetscapes to modern cityscapes. The city is interwoven with numerous trolleybuses, and simply riding them offers a unique and extraordinary experience.

  • Kaunas

    Classic

    area

Lithuania's second-largest city, located near the center of the country. Before the annexation by the Soviet Union, it flourished as the capital of Lithuania. The city center features the historic streetscapes of the Old Town, alongside numerous examples of modernist architecture that emerged during its rapid development as a temporary capital between World War I and World War II. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, the city is home to a memorial museum dedicated to Chiune Sugihara, a diplomat stationed there during World War II, who is often referred to as the "Schindler of the East" and whose story was adapted into a film.

  • Siauliai Hill of Crosses

    Classic

    spot

A hill located on the outskirts of Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. More than 50,000 crosses have been erected here in memory of those executed under the oppression of the Soviet Union and those exiled to Siberia. It is known as Lithuania's largest pilgrimage site. The sight of countless crosses of various types standing together is truly overwhelming.

Things to know about traveling to Lithuania.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
Lithuania's currency is the Euro.
In general, credit cards such as VISA, MasterCard, and AMEX are widely accepted, so you don't need to carry much cash. Having around 100 Euros in small bills for tips or market shopping is reassuring.
It is recommended to exchange Japanese Yen to Euros before traveling.
Tips
In hotels and restaurants, service charges are usually included in the bill, so tipping is generally unnecessary.
If you receive particularly good service, it's a nice gesture to leave a small tip.
Public Safety
When comparing crime rates between Japan and Lithuania, the number of crimes per 100,000 people in 2022 was about three times higher in Lithuania. In particular, the incidence of violent crimes such as murder, robbery, and sexual assault is significantly higher than in Japan.
There have also been reports of crimes targeting foreigners, mainly theft, so be especially cautious of pickpockets.
Clothing
Temperatures are generally about 5 degrees lower than Tokyo during the same period. Like Japan, Estonia has four seasons, but spring, summer, and autumn are short, and winter is long. The temperature fluctuates during seasonal transitions, so it's recommended to dress in layers for adjustment.
In summer, the weather can change quickly, so having rain gear is reassuring. It's also cooler than Japan, so having a jacket is recommended.
In winter, gloves, hats, and other warm clothing are essential.
Things You Should Bring
Multi-plug, essential medicines, portable battery, overseas travel insurance, rain gear, warm clothing
Visa availability and arrangements
A visa waiver agreement has been concluded between Japan and Lithuania. For short-term stays of up to three months, such as tourism or visiting acquaintances, obtaining a visa is waived. Those eligible for the visa waiver must possess a travel document (passport) that has a remaining validity of at least three months from the planned departure date and was issued within the last 10 years.
Lithuania is a member of the Schengen Agreement. As a result, the total duration of stay in Schengen Agreement countries is only permitted within the limit of "a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period." Additionally, you must possess a travel document (passport) that is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area and was issued within the last 10 years.
Required vaccinations
・There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
