What kind of country is Slovakia?

Slovakia is a Central European country bordered by the Czech Republic to the northwest, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, and Austria to the southwest.

Slovakia has been inhabited since prehistoric times and has undergone many transformations as a nation under the rule of various countries throughout its long history. As a result of this historical background, Slovakia is home to buildings of various architectural styles, including well-preserved medieval castles such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Spiš Castle. For Japanese people accustomed to wooden architecture, it might feel like stepping into a fantasy world.
If you visit Slovakia, which is blessed with abundant nature, be sure to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst Caves," which also extends into Hungary. These ice caves, said to have formed over 250,000 years ago during the Ice Age, are magnificent natural formations of grand scale.

Slovakia offers the opportunity to enjoy both human history and natural history.
Have a local coordinator create a special tailor-made trip for you and be sure to visit.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
The currency of Slovakia is the Euro.
You can exchange for Euros at local airports, banks, and hotels, but it is recommended to bring some from Japan considering the exchange rates.

Credit cards, primarily Visa and Mastercard, are generally accepted, but it is safer to have some cash when visiting rural areas.
Tips
In Slovakia, tipping is generally not required.
If you receive additional services at hotels, you can give about 1 Euro. At upscale restaurants, leaving a tip of around 10% is also common.
For taxis, rounding up by about 10% is customary.
Public Safety
In general, Slovakia is stable in terms of safety and is not considered less safe compared to neighboring countries.
However, incidents such as pickpocketing and theft have been reported, so you should remain vigilant, especially in tourist areas.
Clothing
Like Japan, Slovakia has four distinct seasons.
The climate tends to fluctuate more than in Japan, so wearing layers for easy adjustment is recommended. In particular, spring and autumn often see significant temperature changes, so having warm clothing just in case is reassuring.
Since there are many cobblestone streets, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Things you should bring with you
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, travel insurance, warm clothing
Visa availability and arrangements
For short stays of up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism or visiting acquaintances, a visa is not required.
Additionally, Slovakia is a member of the Schengen Agreement. Starting in 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be implemented. From 2025, Japanese travelers to ETIAS-participating countries will need to possess an approved ETIAS upon arrival. For short stays without a visa within the Schengen area, it is stipulated that the stay must not exceed "a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period." As a result, the maximum visa-free stay within the Schengen area, including Slovakia, is "90 days," and all days spent in the Schengen area within the past 180 days are counted as part of the short-stay period.
Additionally, those eligible for the short-stay visa waiver must have a passport with a validity period of more than three months beyond the planned departure date from a Schengen Agreement member country.
Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
