What kind of country is Slovakia?

Slovakia is a Central European country bordered by the Czech Republic to the northwest, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, and Austria to the southwest.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, Slovakia has undergone many transformations under the rule of various nations throughout its long history. As a result, the country is home to buildings of diverse architectural styles, including well-preserved medieval castles like Spiš Castle—now a World Heritage Site. For those familiar with wooden architecture, it might feel as if you are stepping into a fantasy world.
When visiting naturally abundant Slovakia, be sure to also explore the World Heritage site 'Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst Caves,' which spans into Hungary. Formed during an Ice Age over 250,000 years ago, these glacial caves boast a magnificent scale as a natural wonder.

Slovakia is a place where you can enjoy both human history and natural wonders.
Let a local coordinator design a bespoke journey tailored to your desires, and be sure to visit.

The capital of Slovakia, Bratislava adopted its current name in 1919, though it has been known by many former names – including 'Pressburg' in German, 'Pozsony' in Hungarian, 'Prešporok' in Slovak, and 'Prešpurk' in Czech. Located along the border with Hungary and Austria, the city has been home to various ethnic groups throughout its history. It offers countless attractions, from the magnificent and beautiful Bratislava Castle—often referred to as the 'upside-down bed'—to numerous statues on its streets.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
The currency in Slovakia is the Euro.
While you can exchange for Euros at local airports, banks, and hotels, it’s advisable to bring some cash from Japan considering the exchange rates.

Generally, credit cards—especially Visa and Mastercard—are widely accepted, but it’s wise to have some cash on hand when visiting rural areas.
Tips
In Slovakia, tipping is generally not required.
However, if you receive extra services at a hotel, a tip of around 1 Euro is customary; at upscale restaurants, you might leave a tip of about 10%.
For taxis, it’s customary to round up the fare by roughly 10%.
Public Safety
Generally, Slovakia is considered safe and does not have a reputation for being less secure compared to its neighboring countries.
On the other hand, incidents such as pickpocketing and bag-snatching have been reported, so it’s important to stay alert in tourist areas.
Clothing
Just like in Japan, there are four distinct seasons.
Since the climate can fluctuate more dramatically than in Japan, layering—which makes it easy to adjust to changing conditions—is recommended. In particular, because temperatures can vary significantly in spring and autumn, it’s wise to have warm clothing on hand just in case.
Due to the abundance of cobblestone streets, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Things You Should Bring
Multi-plug adapters, any regular medications, a mobile power bank, overseas travel insurance, and warm clothing.
Visa availability and arrangements
For short-term stays of up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism or visiting acquaintances, visa requirements are waived.
Additionally, Slovakia is a member of the Schengen Agreement. Starting in 2025, a European travel information and authorization system known as ETIAS will be introduced. From 2025 onward, Japanese citizens traveling to ETIAS-participating countries will need to possess an approved ETIAS upon arrival. For visa-free short stays within the Schengen area, the regulations stipulate that the total duration must not exceed 90 days within any 180-day period. Consequently, the maximum visa-free stay within the Schengen zone, including Slovakia, is 90 days, and all days spent within the Schengen area during the preceding 180 days are summed up as part of that period.
In addition, those eligible for the short-term visa exemption must have a passport with at least three months of validity remaining beyond their planned departure date from the Schengen area.
Required vaccinations
There are no vaccinations that are mandatory for travel.
