What kind of country is Montenegro?

Montenegro is a country located in Southeastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, and is full of yet-to-be-discovered charms.

About one-third of the 293 km coastline facing the Adriatic Sea is beaches, including Budva, one of Europe's top beach resorts. It is also home to Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its 16th to 17th-century Venetian defense works: the fortification city of Stari Grad and West Stari Grad, as well as other tourist spots where you can find traces of various cultures left throughout its long history.

Due to its compact size, it is possible to traverse the country in a few hours, making it feasible to have a well-rounded trip even during a short break.
It borders Dubrovnik in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, the Sandžak region of Serbia to the northeast, Albania to the southeast, and Kosovo to the east, allowing for the consideration of visiting several countries.

What to see in Montenegro

  • Podgorica

    Classic

    area

The capital of Montenegro, formerly known as Titograd. Throughout its long history, the city has seen changes in rulers, resulting in the old district featuring many Turkish-style buildings influenced by the Ottoman Empire, while the newly developed urban areas showcase European-style architecture. As the educational and artistic hub of Montenegro, the city boasts numerous museums, art galleries, and theaters. The city's name means "at the foot of Gorica," and a few kilometers away lies Gorica Hill, where the ancient ruins of Doclea can still be found.

The city features many attractions, including the Romanesque-style 'Cathedral of Saint Tryphon' built in the 12th century, the Romanesque-Byzantine-style 'Church of Saint Luke' also from the 12th century, and the Gothic-Baroque-style 'Four-story Clock Tower' constructed in the 17th century.

Things to Consider When Traveling to Montenegro.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
The Euro is officially used in Montenegro.
Currency exchange is available at local airports, restaurants, and hotels, but considering the rates and fees, it is recommended to exchange money in Japan.
Credit cards, such as Visa/Master, can generally be used in urban areas.
When traveling to rural areas, it is advisable to have some cash on hand just in case.
Tips
Tipping is generally not necessary, but if you make a special request in a taxi or feel you received good service at a restaurant, it is recommended to leave about 10% of the bill.
Public Safety
While major crimes are not frequent, theft (pickpocketing and snatching) and extortion do occur in Montenegro, particularly in the capital Podgorica, and there have been reports of Japanese nationals falling victim to crime.
Especially during the summer tourist season, crimes such as pickpocketing and snatching targeting tourists unfamiliar with local conditions frequently occur, particularly in tourist areas along the Adriatic coast, such as the old town of Kotor.
Clothing
Basically, like Japan, there are four seasons, and the timing is similar to Japan. However, it often gets colder than in Japan, so it's recommended to have an extra jacket.
In the summer, the sunlight is intense, so it's reassuring to have sun protection like sunglasses and measures to prevent heatstroke.
Things you should bring with you
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, travel insurance, jacket
Visa availability and arrangements
For Japanese nationals, a visa is waived for short stays of up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism, provided no employment is undertaken. However, it is important to note that the period you can stay without a visa is limited to a total of 90 days within 180 days from the first day of entry.
※Montenegro has not established an embassy in Japan, and consular affairs related to the country are handled by the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Japan, so please direct visa inquiries to the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Japan.
Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
