What kind of country is Australia?

Australia is a central country in Oceania, a continent and island region in the Pacific Ocean.

With a land area about 20 times that of Japan, Australia is filled with countless attractions. There are the vast coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef along the east coast, the world's largest monolith known as 'Ayers Rock' in English and 'Uluru' in the indigenous language, and other World Natural Heritage sites. Additionally, there are World Cultural Heritage sites like the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, where you can glimpse the historical culture of the 1800s. Moreover, Australia is home to many animals that only live there, such as koalas, kangaroos, and quokka wallabies. It's the perfect place for an extraordinary trip to refresh both mind and body, away from everyday life. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, opposite to Japan, with little time difference is also an attraction!

Cash, cards and currency exchange
The currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD).
You can exchange Japanese yen at local airports, banks, and exchange offices. However, for safety reasons, it's recommended to carry a credit card instead of a lot of cash.
Tips
There is generally no tipping culture. However, a small gesture of appreciation for good service is welcomed.

When you receive good service at a restaurant or when a tour guide is excellent, it is smart to give a tip.
Public Safety
Australia is often considered a relatively safe country, but compared to Japan, general crime occurs much more frequently, so cautious behavior is required.

In areas frequently visited by tourists, such as airports, beaches, and restaurants, pickpocketing and theft occur. Please remain vigilant and act cautiously.
Clothing
The southern coastal areas have mild and pleasant weather throughout the year.
Due to temperature differences between morning and evening, it is recommended to bring a jacket or similar clothing.
Since the seasons are opposite to Japan, it might be good to bring clothing that is easy to adjust.

Additionally, for safety, it is recommended to wear comfortable clothing. Since the sun is strong, it might be good to take sun protection measures during the summer.

Visa availability and arrangements
If you hold a Japanese passport, you need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) for travel purposes such as tourism, visiting acquaintances or family, or short business trips (within 90 days). The 'Australia ETA App' can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play Store to apply.
As of July 2023, the applicant must apply personally. Electronic payment is required, so please have a credit card or similar ready. Applications cannot be made through an agency.
Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
However, travelers over one year old from countries with a risk of yellow fever, excluding the Galapagos Islands, and those who have stayed in transit for more than 12 hours are required to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate (Yellow Card).
